When using Matic Bridge, users can choose between two distinct bridging mechanisms: the Proof of Stake (PoS) Bridge and the Plasma Bridge. Each has different security guarantees, withdrawal times, and supported token types. Understanding this difference helps you make informed decisions about how to move your assets.
The PoS Bridge: Speed and Flexibility
The PoS Bridge is the default and most widely used bridge on Polygon. It is secured by Polygon's validator set — more than 80 validators who stake POL tokens as collateral to honestly process cross-chain state transitions. Deposits complete in 5–10 minutes, and withdrawals take approximately 3 hours as validators process the burn event on Polygon and unlock funds on Ethereum.
- Supports: ETH, all ERC-20 tokens, ERC-721 NFTs, ERC-1155 tokens
- Deposit time: 5–10 minutes
- Withdrawal time: ~3 hours
- Security model: Polygon PoS validator consensus
- Best for: Everyday DeFi transfers and most token types
The Plasma Bridge: Maximum Security
The Plasma Bridge derives its security from Ethereum mainnet itself, using a fraud-proof mechanism where any observer can challenge invalid state transitions during a 7-day window. This exit mechanism provides stronger security guarantees than PoS validation alone, at the cost of a 7-day withdrawal period. It is primarily used for the native POL token (previously MATIC).
The 7-day withdrawal window on the Plasma Bridge exists because fraud proofs require time for any network participant to challenge an invalid exit before it finalizes on Ethereum.
For the vast majority of users transferring ERC-20 tokens, stablecoins, or ETH, the PoS Bridge is the appropriate choice. The Plasma Bridge is specifically useful for large POL token movements where the additional security guarantee justifies the longer wait time.
