Bridging tokens between Ethereum and Polygon using Matic Bridge takes only a few minutes once your wallet is configured. The official bridge supports MetaMask and most EVM-compatible wallets. Before you start, ensure you have ETH in your wallet to cover the Ethereum gas fee for locking assets on-chain.
Step 1: Set Up Your Wallet
Install MetaMask and add the Polygon network to it. The Polygon Mainnet RPC details are: Network Name — Polygon Mainnet; RPC URL — https://polygon-rpc.com; Chain ID — 137; Currency Symbol — POL (formerly MATIC). Once added, you can switch between Ethereum Mainnet and Polygon Mainnet directly in your wallet interface.
- Install MetaMask from the official browser extension store.
- Create or import your wallet using your seed phrase.
- Add Polygon Mainnet as a custom network using the RPC details above.
- Ensure you have ETH on Ethereum Mainnet to pay for gas.
Step 2: Bridge Ethereum to Polygon
Navigate to the official Polygon Bridge at maticbridge.com, connect your MetaMask wallet, and select the token you want to transfer. Enter the amount, review the estimated gas fee and transfer time, then click Transfer. Confirm any approval transactions in MetaMask, then sign the final bridge transaction. Your tokens will arrive on Polygon within 5–10 minutes for the PoS bridge.
Always keep a small amount of MATIC (now POL) on Polygon to pay for gas fees when interacting with DeFi protocols after bridging.
To withdraw tokens back to Ethereum, connect your wallet while on the Polygon network, select Withdraw, choose your token and amount, and confirm. The PoS bridge withdrawal takes approximately 3 hours, after which you can claim your tokens on Ethereum mainnet.
- Deposits (Ethereum → Polygon): 5–10 minutes via PoS bridge
- Withdrawals (Polygon → Ethereum): ~3 hours via PoS bridge
- Plasma withdrawals: up to 7 days (used for POL token only)
- Gas fee: typically $0.50–$3 depending on Ethereum network conditions
